Torghast Tips and Tricks

(Great Renown Farm)

WELCOME TO YOUR ETERNAL JAIL

Just kidding, well sort of.... Torghast is the bane of Shadowlands players. Required content to access the all powerful legendaries. And alot of people hate that, but....

It's also an INSANE way to farm renown right now. And once you hit 80 your done, there is no renown increase coming in 9.2 so the only thing to do is level another covenant... and another... and one last one.

This is of course only if you want the rewards from all 4 (Notably mounts and Follower XP catch up mechanics that can make for nice adventure table alts) or if you are likely to use different covenants for different specs, damage profiles or situations (Tyrannical weeks vs. Fortified weeks for example). It is a big chore but thanks to the addition of Tower Knowledge and the Box of Many Things, Torghast really isn't that bad any more, you just need to know what to look out for.

THE BOX OF MANY THINGS

I'll start of by introducing The Box of Many Things. This was an addition to 9.1 that allowed players to receive an additional resource when completing Torghast runs (Tower Knowledge) and spending it at the Box to receive permanent buffs while inside Torghast. This essentially means the more Torghast you do, the less Torghast you do, as it takes less time to complete each time you upgrade the Box. However, if you are new to this system it can be a bit confusing on which powers to get and in what order. Eventually you will unlock it all (in fact farming 1 renown to 80 is almost enough to unlock it all) and this will make it much easier for your weaker alts to get through the runs fast and safely. Once you have unlocked the box you should focus on the powers in this order:

1. AUTOLOOT MOBS.

Goodness, this one is a real quality of life buff. It's on the very first row, and even though it provides no player power, it will actually speed up your runs by not having to loot mobs you kill. Its just So. DAMN. GOOD.

2. Blessing of the Ancients.

Also on the first row, this one is where Torghast speed clears REALLY begin, especially for stealth classes. The third point is quite expensive and may take a few runs to get to but it is Oh so worth it. You can also consider coming back for the 3rd point after upgrading the below option if you're struggling to deal with torments.

3. Freed from Torment.

This is on the second row, and will remove 1/2 torments from the run (basically permanent debuffs). This is also a super helpful power and makes the runs so much easier for undergeared characters and alts.

At this point you can really focus whatever you think works best for you and just work down towards the final tier. The second last tier take Anima Plunderer to give you more access to powers and on the final tier take Empowered Nova ASAP. To reach the final tier you need to spend ALOT of knowledge so just take the talents that help you the most. Personally, I recommend increased Empower duration, haste and movespeed when empowered, extra damage to bosses, elites give more progress to empower bar as my next focus after the torments/blessings. Then look to take reduced damage from bosses/elites which allows you to pull more or just be safer in clearing runs..

One of the most important things to track for fast clear speeds is what blessing is active for the day. Each daily reset the Torghast blessings will change. Blessings to keep a look out for are "Challenge Slayer", "Advantage" and "Diminishing Blows". Challenge Slayer gives you a 40% chance to instantly kill any elite except the boss on layer 5 when you reduce their health below 40%. This makes the runs much faster and safer for less geared characters. Advantage makes the final boss much weaker which is often the most make-or-break part of the run. Diminishing blows reduces the HP of the first 3 elites you hit by 75%, this is the speed run power. If you are a class that can stealth or CC and has high mobility, you can simply run to the Empowered elite at the end of each floor and quickly 1 shot them with cooldowns and advance to the next floor. If you do this strategy you need to be extremely careful not to accidently AoE and hit elites and consume charges. It is a good idea to un-socket Shard of Zed if you have it equipped as the the unholy aura can proc and consume charges. With the Diminishing Blows blessing, most classes (that can stealth or out run mobs) can complete an entire layer 9 run in 2-3 minutes by 1 shotting the empowered mobs at the end of floor 1, 2 and 4 and skipping all powers (except those from the empowered mobs) and fighting the boss on floor 5 with all CD's. This means you can complete upwards of 20 runs an hour and generally go from renown 40-80 in 2-3 hours (which is the fastest method in the game currently). If you do have stealth it is a good idea to just check Torghast for this blessing if you are considering farming renown and only doing runs if it is present that day.

As you get more familiar with Torghast, some powers stick out as much more powerful. To complete faster runs, I would recommend simply full clearing the first floor and (assuming you got reasonable powers from a full floor cleared) skip as much as possible on the remaining floors and rush to the boss. This can allow most classes without access to stealth to complete a layer 9 Torghast in 10-15 minutes. (This is much less ideal to farm renown). If you do need to take it slow like this, I would recommend stopping at renown 65-70 and finishing off the rest of the grind with guaranteed sources like the two Covenant Sanctum Weeklies, the Korthia Weekly, the 2 World Bosses, the Maw assault, the tormentors of Torghast event in the maw and any of the covenant callings available.
